In the UK the winter is usually a wet, windy and cold affair, and the snow is little more than slush making the roads dangerous and the atmosphere damp and chilly. The long months of miserable weather can prompt even the hardiest Brit to make a quick getaway and head overseas to warmer climates. Many winter sun travellers make the decision to take a holiday at the last minute finding cheap deals online or through a travel agent. One of the biggest money saving tips for travelling last minute is to take only hand luggage therefore saving on the baggage charges as well as cutting out the waiting time at the airport. Taking hand luggage only however does mean you have to fit everything you need into a small case. So what do you need to take?
Yes, the weather in the UK is rubbish, but where you are going you will be able to sun yourself and paddle in the sea so you will need a few bikinis. These are small so you can take a couple, but don’t go overboard. When you are not wearing one you can wash another in the sink, so two is probably plenty.
Shoes are probably the thing that will take up the most space. Travel in a pair of trainers or comfy flats, then pack one pair of going out shoes and some flipflops. You shouldn’t need more than this and it should give you enough pairs for all activities.
Travel in layers so you minimise what goes in your bag. Pack a few lightweight tops, some shorts and a skirt and a cardy or two. Make sure everything goes together and mix and match so you have several different combinations for your trip. One or two dresses for beach or eveningwear are good too but can be hard to buy out of season. Check out George maxi dresses for some inexpensive warm weather chic. Buy some washing powder when you are there and hand wash a few bits as needed.
You are not going to the middle of a desert or jungle (unless you’re a particularly adventurous type!), so you will be able to get hold of anything you need like shampoo and shower gel once you reach your destination. If there are specific products you swear by and are worried you might not be able to buy overseas then decant some into small pots to fit in your bag. Remember you can’t take too many liquids in your hand luggage and these must be put into a clear bag at the airport. Check with your airline before you fly what your limit is so you can plan ahead.
Most flights will allow you one overhead bag, the size of a small suitcase, and a handbag, so you should have plenty of room for everything you need. Anything that is cheap you might consider leaving at home and buying whilst away, and make sure you think twice about everything you pack so you don’t end up over limit. Happy Winter Holidays!
