Setting up in business is something many people consider, whether it’s a side-hustle to make a little extra cash or a full-time endeavor to make a regular income. While there are many avenues you can go down, a popular way to run a business is to open up an online (e-commerce) store and to sell a specific product.
We are going to focus on fashion in this article, though the ideas displayed here are relevant to any other type of store you are interested in setting up. Of course, you may already be operating a fashion business online, but you may still find these tips helpful.
Setting yourself up
You have two options when setting up online. The first is to set up your own website, whether it’s something you have developed yourself or by using a free or paid website builder. The second (and easiest option) is to set yourself up on a platform that already has everything you need to get going. Particularly if web design isn’t your forte, then using a dedicated e-commerce platform such as Shopify should be the best option for you.
Check out the competition
Whether you are selling fashion you have designed yourself or outfits you have purchased from other sources, you still need to check out the competition. What are they offering customers? What is their pricing model? Are they doing anything better than you? To win customers over to your side, vow to better your competition in every aspect of your online store.
Focus on customer service
Following on from the above, you need to find ways to make your customer come to you. How you do this is up to you, but having an effective returns policy is one way, as is free shipping. A courier service that can offer a quick and reliable delivery is something else you need to consider, as are your payment methods which should include anything that will make buying from you easier.
Showcase your product
Don’t rely on a few snaps from your trusted smartphone when taking pics of your fashion products. Consider hiring a professional fashion photographer to really make your pictures sing, and hire a copywriter to write product descriptions that will grab your store visitor’s attention. We also recommend hiring people to model your fashion, as that can form the basis of your photo gallery or video collection of the outfits you have available.
Include a blog
A slightly more informal way of marketing what you have to offer, your blog should be used to enhance your relationship with the customer. Having something interesting to read will keep them on your store for longer, and you can include links to your fashion through the articles you (or a copywriter) produces. For example, you could write an article on finding the perfect handbag, and offer suggestions on how to match your garments with any handbag in question. Then use links to guide the reader to the products you have mentioned, as they will hopefully be more inclined to buy after reading your helpful advice.
One of the best ways to market your product is through social media. For example, you could integrate social media buttons on your site, making it easy for your customers to share what you have to offer with their networks. You should also target your own social networks, as well as using Facebook Ads and the like to further promote what you have to offer.
It will take a while to build up a customer base, but follow our tips and you should find success coming your way. Let us know what you think, and if you are currently operating a fashion store of your own, please share any words of wisdom with us.
